Prevention Programs

In-Classroom Prevention Education

From values identification to real-life drug effects on the mind, body, and spirit; our once monthly in-classroom education covers it all. Each session is designed to be informative, age-appropriate, and engaging while encouraging students to live a clean and sober lifestyle. Teachers too benefit from both the presentations as well as the tools we provide and are encouraged to facilitate follow-up discussions to solidify prevention program goals.

Life-Path Modification Mentorship

Prior to feeling the need to engage in substance use or any other illegal activity, youth of any age are encouraged to seek the services of a SAFE mentor to assist in any number of life issues which may predispose him or her to partake in any kind of destructive behavior. Youth are assessed for potential areas of improvement and areas of strengths are explored. Youth participate in mentoring sessions anywhere from one to five times a week and work closely with their mentor to develop positive coping mechanisms in response to life stressors.

On Applebee Pond

What is “On Applebee Pond”?

Beginning in Preschool, SAFE's Early Childhood Prevention Program Coordinator presents the award winning life-skills curriculum on stage during the On Applebee Pond puppet shows. For the past thirteen years, this scientific based, award winning life-skills curriculum has used the visual power of puppetry to engage over 700 pre-school through third grade children each month of the school year. Designed by the Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission of Pennsylvania, “On Applebee Pond” is a creative prevention tool and cross-age teaching mechanism that aids children in developing positive life skills, thereby decreasing their risk of using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The program focuses on four prevention themes: social skills, self-esteem, conflict resolution, and age appropriate awareness of chemicals/drugs/tobacco. By addressing each of these areas, the “On Applebee Pond”  program assists in building a strong foundation for the development of capable young people and their drug-free teen years to come.

Team SAFE

What is Team SAFE?

Team SAFE is a club of Coronado Middle School students who take a pledge not to use alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.  Team SAFE meetings and prevention education workshops are held once a month on campus during school lunch times. Monthly opportunities for community service, peer leadership, and participation in numerous Coronado Recreation events are elements of the Team SAFE program.  In addition to being in a safe, drug-free environment, Team SAFE members receive a discount off Coronado Recreation programs including teen dances and Friday night events.

Trading Card Club

What is the Trading Card Club?

The Trading Card Club (TCC) is a cross mentorship activity enlisting the participation of both High School and Elementary School aged children. Primarily developed to encourage high school drug usage abstinence, Trading Cards is much more than just another on-campus club. Each youth who vows not to use tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs receives a ‘baseball style’ trading card featuring the student's photo and 'stats'. Included within the statistics each student is given the opportunity to tout their school-based participation and successes as well as list their personal 'motto'. The younger children collect, and trade these cards and they enjoy regular lunchtime visits from their Trading Card mentors.  TCC members also participate in school and community philanthropic activities thus encouraging a vested interest in the future of the city in which they live.
