About Us
Why does Coronado SAFE exist?
Through statistical data obtained from various sources, it is readily apparent that youth in Coronado are basically no different than youth in other areas in that some of them will get caught up in using drugs, alcohol and other harmful substances. This problem compromises the health and safety of our young people and drains our community of valuable resources. For instance, the annual cost of substance abuse intervention and treatment in San Diego County is more than $3.9 billion1 and San Diego County’s drug-related death rate exceeds that of the state and is double that of the country. These statistics include Coronado. Coronado SAFE was conceived by the community in response to this problem.
How do we know this?
Coronado SAFE uses quantitative and qualitative data to support its findings. We use tools such as the California Healthy Kids Survey, the Coronado Youth Survey Tool, and Environmental Scans. We also partner closely with and receive information from, other local, State and Federal prevention agencies.
What does Coronado SAFE do?
Youth participate in drug use due to the following factors:
• Availability and Access- Can they get them? • Acceptance – Can they get away with using them?
We work to ensure that alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are NOT available, NOT accessible, and NOT acceptable. To this end, we have created a variety of prevention programs and intervention services. We also offer valuable resources for both parents and youth.
