Have you ever swam in the ocean? If so,
then you might know how powerful the
waves can be. You might even know what
it’s like to be enveloped by the waves,
entirely underwater, tossed around with little
control. Life stressors, like the COVID-19
Pandemic, can feel like that sometimes.
It can be overwhelming.
While we can’t control the waves, we can
control if it knocks us over. We can pay
attention to the waves, we can swim, we can
duck, we can jump, etc. Coping skills are like
that. They can help make the waves of our
life become more manageable.
One coping skill is breathing. When done
well, breathing techniques can calm our
bodies down and reminds us that we’re safe
and okay.

We can use breathing techniques preventatively or it can be used when we’re overwhelmed. The important key is to
practice breathing techniques often, even when we're feeling calm. Take time to care for yourself.
Here are a few examples of good times to use breathing exercises:

  • After reading the news
  • Before bed
  • To reduce school/work stress
  • Before/after a difficult conversation
  • To clear your head
  • Any time you're feeling overwhelmed

There are many kinds of breathing exercises. Find one that works well for you!

WE'RE HERE FOR YOU.
If you or someone you know could use a wellness check, Coronado SAFE, a local non-profit providing
